History of biotin discovery
The diversification of biotin names is naturally related to its discovery history.
In 1901
, Eugene Diels discovered a substance that can promote the growth of yeast, and named it "Bioactive Substance" (bios). In 1933, American biochemist Franklin Elmer Allison and others isolated a nitrogen-fixing bacterium from leguminous rhizobia and named it "coenzyme R". In 1936, German chemists Fritz Kogo and Beno Tennys separated a crystalline substance from cooked egg yolk, which can promote yeast growth, and called it "biotin". In 1937, American scientist Paul Iorgi discovered a substance that could prevent and treat dermatitis caused by feeding raw egg white to rats, so he named it "vitamin H" with the initials of skin Haut in German. In 1940, Iorgi and his colleagues confirmed through experiments that bioactive substances, coenzyme R, biotin and vitamin H were the same substance. In 1942, American biochemist Vincent Du Vignord and others discovered the chemical structure of biotin. Vitamin H belongs to vitamin B family, and it is the seventh discovery, so it is also called sustenance.
